AMD vs Intel

A lot of people get confused when it comes to buying a processor for their needs. So which one? There isn't black and white answer to that question. It really depends on what your budget is, what you want to achieve and what you're going to be doing on a daily basis with your computer. If you're doing light gaming and aren't interested in spending a ton of cash? Some of these CPU's come with graphics chips built in. Usually doing a half way decent job. But if you're series at all about gaming you'll be buying a GPU along side the CPU. If you're just doing work related tasks then you're perfectly fine with an IGP/APU.

AMD

    PROS:
  • Cheaper processors
  • More cores/threads per dollar
  • For the cheaper bach, much better APU's
  • Easily overclockable with no special SKU's

  • CONS:
  • Poor Single core performance
  • High temps and power consumption

INTEL

    PROS:
  • Generally much faster
  • Better for gaming in most cases
  • Better power efficiency

  • CONS:
  • More expensive
  • Need a special SKU'd chip to overclock

GAMING

Games don't require that much CPU power these days. Generally you're fine with an i5 or the 8000 series AMD CPU's. However its generally accepted that modern i5's are better for gaming because of their single core performance, which games usually respond better to. If you're really looking to step up your game then you're looking at an i7. It can depend on the game but Intel core i7's don't give a huge frames per second increase over their i5 counter parts. That might soon change in the future but as of right now, i7's are considered a luxury when putting one inside a computer meant for gaming.

Here's a video showing a bit of what I'm talking about.

WORKSATION

For most situations you're fine with either AMD or Intel as long as you're doing things like browsing the internet, typing up a word document or doing your taxes. More CPU heavy tasks like compiling a program, encoding or rendering video or decompliing data are better suited for i5's or i7 processors. AMD 8000 series are better than i3's and some i5's for that task as well.

Keep in mind AMD is releasing new CPU's in the 3rd quarter of 2016 codenamed "ZEN". AMD has resued the Bulldozer series CPU since 2011. So the match up's shown in the video are not truly fair to say the least. Hopefully Zen brings Intel some very healthy and needed competition.
