Good-Bye to an Old Friend
Built before 1883, this house is
one of the oldest in Glencoe, MN.
Frank and Mary Gaines purchased
the house in 1914. They had two
children - Mary and Paul.
After Paul married, he and his wife lived in the upstairs of the house
while his parents lived on the main level. After his parents passed away,
Paul and Eunice occupied the entire house. We bought the house from
Eunice in 1989. I operate my business in a few of the rooms on the main
level. I own a Hair Salon and dabble a bit in collectables and antques.
The attraction for us to this property was the original condition of
house. No changes had been made to the main level since 1914.
Still remaining was:
- a large wood burning cook-stove with a kerosene burner conversion
- a one room kerosene burning furnace
- a well-pump on the kitchen sink
- and vintage wall paper everywhere
Little did we know about the work that was ahead of us. The price
was affordable, so we thought "Let's Buy It."
To restore a property back to a suitable condition after so many years
of neglect is not an easy task. Many hours were
spent on restoration work and there is still quite a bit left to do. After the
sales transaction takes place, and the salvage
is completed, this house will be torn down.
