The Lucchese family was founded in the 1920's by then boss Gaetano Reina. In 1951, Tommy Lucchese gained control as boss and turned the family into one of the most powerful families to sit on the Commission. The Lucchese Family fell after Victor Amuso was put in charge. After this, many members feared for their lives and turned into informants. In fact, acting boss, Alphonse D'Arco, was the first boss of the New York Crime Families to Testify against the mob.

Today, the current official boss is Steven Crea.
