Well, I'd been playing with groups since about 1960. Just playing, getting money, working. I met the Beatles in Germany when I was there with another group [Rory Storm and the Hurricanes], and we used to have 12 hours' work between the two groups. We got to know each other pretty well. We allcame back to England, and their drummer was sick, so they asked me if I would sit in, just for a day or so, till he got better, I said year. Then I went with another group again and they got him back. Then he was sick again and they came and asked me again. So every time he was sick they used to come and ask me to sit in, which I used to love because they were a much better group than the one I was with. Brain Epstein phoned me up on a Tuesday and said,"Would you like to join The Beatles" I said,"Yeah, I'd love to join". Then he said,"Well, can you get here tonight?" I said,"I can't leave the other group just like that. I must give a bit of notice." So I said I'd be there Saturday. Then I arrived on Saturday and we had about two hours' rehearsal. We played that [very] night. |
