Paul met me the first day I did Gene Vincent's "Be Bop a Lula" live onstage. Ivan Vaughn ,a mutual friend of both of us, brought him to see my group, the Quarry Men. We met and we talked after the show. He was playing guitar backstage and doing "Twenty Flight Rock" by Eddie Cochran, and Isaw he had talent. After talking about all the music and artists we liked, I turned round, amd right there at this first meeting I asked,"Do you want to join our group?" He looked down at his feet for a minute or so and said,"Um,um,ah,yeah!" I was looking for a name like Crickets that meant two things. Then from Crickets I eventually got to Beetles. I changed the bee part of the word because it didn't mean two things on its own. So I changed the e to an a and then it meant two things. It contained beat, which is what we were - a beat group. When you said it, people thought of crawly things, and when you read it, it said beat music. |
