Fiat Money is any thing that is declared money by law. In the United States, at this time, all money is fiat money.

This includes all coins and currency issued by the United States government and Federal Reserve Notes which are not issued by the government. Most writers claim that fiat money is paper money not backed by gold or silver. This doesn't include check-book money which is created on the books of the banks and is not declared money by any law.
