FUN NOTES

When humans began to raise sheep and cattle, they needed help keeping their herds together and driving them to market. The oldest known dogs in the herding group are the long,low-slung Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh corgis. The corgi was trained to drive his own cattle to a good grazing spot at the direction of the farmer and to watch over them while they grazed. Corgis work their herd from behind-by nipping at the heels and dodging swiftly to avoid the ensuing kick-rather than running around the herd. Corgis seldom give ground. If a cow should turn and charge, the dog will bite its nose, causing it to turn and join the rest of the herd.
These fox-faced canines have been driving cattle, sheep, ducks, or geese for thousands of years, although the working instinct has not been taken advantage of for quite some time. In early settlements the dogs were prized family members, guarding children and the house and helping hunt game for the table.
