  Stack-n-Whack            Fabric required for Stack-n-Whack
  • 6 yds. of the main fabric (containing at least 6 repeats of the design).
  • 2 1/2 yds. Background fabric B
  • 3 1/4 yds. Accent fabric C (star points and border)
  • 6 yds. for backing
  • 3/4 yd. for binding(cut 2 1/2" strips crosswise).
  • Batting to measure 80' X 108"

             Instructions

  1. Whacking main fabric triagles for the block kits
    1. Using the basic stacking method, cut and stack six identical repeats of the main Fabric A (size 21" wide X one full repeat long)
    2. Trim about 1/4" from the pinned edge of the fabric stack, if necessary to get a smooth edge.Cut a 5" strip through all six layers. Make 6 5" x 21" strip total.
    3. Lay the ruler down on the strip set with the 60° line along one edge.Place ruler far enough in to avoid the selvages. Cut through all layers and set aside first cut as scrap.
    4. carefully turn the strip around so the angled edge is to your left ( or to your right if you are left-handed). Lay ruler down and measure over 5" from the angled edge.Line up the vertical ruler line with the angled edge and cut the diamond.
    5. Cut the diamond in half, you now have two block kits.Pin through eacjh kit on the straight-grain edge(the original edge of the strip) to help you remind you which way to sewthem. Continue cutting block kits from the strip.
    6. Repeat the process for all six strips.
  2. Whacking border, background, and accent triangles
    1. For B and C triangles, fold the fabric in half lengthwise and cut the strip 5" wide make 4 of these.
    2. Unfold, stack the strips, and cut into triangles, folowing steps c-e from above. You do not need to pin these but keep them stacked with all the straight-gain edges on one side.
  3. Whacking half triangles
    1. To create straight edges, you will add half-triangles to the border units of the double quilt. These half-triangles are cut from slightly larger 60° triangles, which are cut through the center along the straight grain. Each triangle will yield two half -triangels.Keep the left halves and right halves stacked separately until you are ready to piece the border units.
  4. Piecing the hexagon star blocks
    1. Unpin one block kit (six identical triangles), taking note of the straight edge. This will be the outside edge of the hexagon. and the opposite point will be the center. To keep from unintentionally turning a triangle, put a reference oin in each of the six triangles on that edge.
    2. Making sure the reference pins are at the top, place the block kit next to your machine.Pick up the first two triangles and sew them, right sides together, along the right edges. repeat with the second set of triangles. Press the seam allowance open.
    3. Take one of the remaining triangles and lay it to the right of one of the open pairs. Flip it over onto the pair and sew from the outer edge to the center. Repeat with the other pair and the last triangle.Clip the triangle tips that extend past the seam allowances. Press allowances open. You sholud have two identical halves, remove pins.
    4. Place right halves right side together and stitch across the center of the block, matching the crossed seams at the center. press seam allowances open.
    5. piece all the hexagons in the same manner.
  5. Adding the star points
    1. Lay a star block next to your machine, right side up, with the center seam running vertically. Lay a star point on the center tirangle, right sides together. with the straight-grain edge placed as shown by arrow in (figure 6-14). The corners of the triangle should match up with the triangle tips that extend outside the star block. sew this seam.
    2. Continue to add one point to each block in this manner. Turn the blocks around and add a triangle to the opposite side to make a diamond shape block (figure 6-15). Press allowances toward the star points. take care not to stretch the bias edges.
  6. piecing the quilt top
  7. add the half triangles to the edges to square off the center, sew rows together adding a 1" border from Fabric B as boder 1 and a 3 1/2" border from Fabric A as boder 2
  • Assemble the backing
  • Pin the quilt top batting and backing together and quilt.
