BENSON GRAVEL A Three Generation Family Business Over 50 Years Experience Early Beginnings: 1950's
In the early 1950's, Arnold C. Benson started a one man gravel hauling business called
Benson Gravel in his hometown of Kerkhoven, Minnesota. He hauled gravel, fill, and black dirt
from small, farmer-owned pits for local residents. Growth Years: 1960-1990
In 1958, Arnold's son Dewayne joined his father
in the business and by 1965 had taken primary ownership. Arnold continued to haul gravel until
his death in 1974. Over the next 30 years, the business grew to employ five truck drivers who
hauled materials for over six government townships, commercial bulding projects, and residential
customers. In 1978, Dewayne purchased over 200 acres of farmland with a rich sand and gravel
base near Swift Falls, Minnesota. This land continues to provide the majority of Benson
Gravel's materials today. A Change in Ownership & Continued Growth: 1990-Present
After Dewayne's death in 1990, the business
ownership transferred to his daughter Susan Benson and son-in-law Stan Wagner. This change
also moved Benson Gravel from a sole proprietorship to a corporation. Sue and Stan continue
to grow the business by expanding hauling and services to a 30 mile radius area in west
central Minnesota and purchasing an additional 80 acres of farmland for fill and black dirt
materials. Since 1990, annual sales have increased by 50% to over $450,000 per year.
