Erick was good enough to sit down with me for a bit and answer some questions that have been rolling around in my mind for a few years of watching him race.
- Have you always had a love of cars?
- Yes, ever since I was 7, my dad brought me to my first demo derby.
- When did you start running in demo derbys?
- Fall derby during the Meeker County Fair 1995, I was a junior in High School and been running since.
- How many have you won or taken position and is winning really worth all the time and effort?
- 12 times, winning isn't everything, but it definitely is a bonus, I go there to have fun and make it more enjoyable for those around me.
- What kind of sacrifices have you made to keep up with this sport?
- I've given up most of my athletic pastimes as well as family events, pretty much everything. Some say I'm obsessed with this and I would have to agree. I just love it!
- How does your girlfriend fit into all of this?
- She helps me paint, strip the cars out, does a good job of taping, and inspires me to do my best.
- On average, how much is spent overall on a single car?
- "I spend on average $300 per car, but I have some major advantages in knowing a lot of people in the sport.
- What information can you give me about how you run without giving away any "secrets"?
- Probably this biggest advantage I have is that I know most of the other drivers and I consider friends of mine so we look out for each other. Keep your head, and use your whole car, and STAY FOCUSED!
- Have you ever cheated?
- No more than than anyone else.
- Do you have any idols in this sport?
- Andy Hanson, Shawn Nolan
