The category of Constructed consists of pre-built decks.
Standard consists of cards currently in "rotation." Standard always changes. New sets for Magic
come out roughly every 3 months and all those cards are put into the standard category. Every year
now the oldest sets get cut out of rotation and are not able to be played in standard anymore. Our
local fanzone in the mall no longer has standard because nobody plays it. Standard can be costly
because the meta always shifts. Decks in Standard usually play around 60 cards.
Modern consiststs of every set after the eight edition except for certain cards. Every now and then
Wizards of the Coast bans cards that they think could be detrimental the how modern plays. The
average cost of a modern deck would be around 500 dollars. Personally, I think that this is the best
format due to not alot of changes. The only reason to spend money after owning a deck is if Wizard
bans a card. Then you just need to find a replacement usually. Decks in Modern usually play around
60 cards. The card to the right is one of the most played cards in the Constructed format.
Commander is a unique format. To build a commander deck, one chooses a commander creature
card and builds a 99 card deck around that commander. The cards in the deck have to correspond
with the colors of your commander. There can only be one of each card in each commander deck.
This format is really enjoyable with around 4 players.
Every card ever printed is allowed in this format. There are restrictions to the amount of certain cards,
but every card is playable.
Legacy is basically the same as Vintage except it is missing the "Power 9." These cards are absolutely
busted. One of the cards named the Black Lotus is one of the most recognizable cards of the game.
Pauper contains only the rarity level of common cards. This makes the deck making of these decks
really interesting. Instead of picking all of these super efficient and expensive cards that make
gameplay fast, you pick a bunch of underpowered cards.
The category of Limited consists of decks that are made after opening packs in certain formats.
Drafts consist of making your deck up on the spot. Drafts have a group of people who each open a pack
of magic cards. Each player picks one card out the pack and pass the rest of the cards to the right.
They do this process until the cards of each pack have been picked. They do this two more times and
then each player builds a deck out of the cards they have attained. Players receive land cards because
players can't attain enough land cards in the packs to make a solid deck. The decks have to be a
minimum of 40 cards.
Each player receives 6 booster packs. They open these packs and continue to make a 40
card deck. The players receive land cards to make their decks.
