Chip Carving
Chip carving is a style of carving where small chips are cut out of a flat surface. Usually the designs are based on geometric patterns. This style of carving is usually done with special chip carving knives or chisels.
Relief Carving
Relief carvng is where figures are carved into a flat pannel of wood. They project slightly from the background instead of standing freely. This gives the look of a 3d object on a 2d plane. Relief carvings are created with different sized gouges and chisels, some of which require a mallet to drive them through the wood.
Flat-Plane Carving
Flat-Plane carving is a style of figure carving where the figures are carved in large flat planes, usually by using a carving knife. There is little to no sanding done to the figure to keep the flat tool marks that give the cariving its signature look and feel. This style is most popular in places such as Scandinavia.
Lovespoon
Lovespoons are wooden spoons carved as a gift of romantic intent. The handles are usually carved with symbols of love and was intended to reflect the skill of the carver. The symbols on the spoons represent different things, horeshoes for luck, crosses for faith, bells for marriage, hearts for love, and locks for security. There are also more complex carvings such as chains which are more of a demonstration of a carver's skill.
