The first generation Lightning is often considered the truck that really started
the sports truck market. Sure it wasn't the first one, but it saw a lot more prodution numbers than the Cyclone did making it more accesible for the general
public. Being a N/A (naturally aspired) truck with a 351ci Windsor engine, the truck compared to most trucks at the time, was considered fast. Although Ford
didn't keep the model going for long. Only kept it going for a few production years before they placed it on the backburner. The Lightning was then brought back to life in 1999 when the second generation was produced. This Lightning had a 5.4L v8 with a Eaton supercharger giving the v8 a large boost in horse power and an even larger boost in torque. This second generation Lightning was for a good while the fastest production truck until in 2004 the Dodge Ram SRT-10 arived and dethroned the truck. Ford is in the process of redesigning the Lightning for the near future and hopes to reclaim its crown as owner of the fastest pickup truck. |
