Cancun's History

Cancun Mexico is an island approximately 16 miles long and a quarter-mile wide.It is situated in the state of Quintana Roo in the south-eastern part of Mexico off the northeast tip ofthe Yucatan peninsula, on the Caribbean coast alsoknown as the Riviera Maya.

The island is connected to the Mexican mainland by two bridges. Cancun Mexico has a resident population of over 300,000 persons and is divided into two main parts: El Centro, downtown of Cancun, Mexico, is where most of the local residentslive, and is home to many smaller hotels, restaurants and shops.

The famous Cancun Mexico Hotel Zone, the principal tourist area, is located on a 8 mile peninsula jutting out into the Caribbean Sea, and is where the luxury hotels and modern shopping malls are to be found. There are many reasons for Cancun's popularity as a tourist destination including: it gorgeous beaches with clear turquoise waters, excellent resort hotels offering a full range of amenities and modern facilities, gourmetrestaurants, vibrant night life, great shops, and nearby Mayan ruins.
