  1. "My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know the red man has great heroes, too" said Chief Henry Standing Bear.

  2. Chief Henry Standing Bear wrote these words to sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski in 1939 urging him to come to the Black Hills and carve a mountain sculpture honoring American Indians.

  3. Ziolkowski arrived in the Black Hills in May of 1947. He worked on the mountain until his death on October 20, 1982.

  4. Korczak's family continues the dream and work progresses on the world's largest mountain sculpture.

  5. When finished, Crazy Horse will stand 641 feet long and 563 feet high.

  6. Crazy Horse Memorial is the world's largest sculpture-in-progress, and frequent drilling and mountain blasts make each visit unique. When completed, Crazy Horse Memorial will stand 563 feet tall by 641 feet long.

  7. The memorial is open at 7am during the summer months until the nightly "legends in light" laser-sight show starting at dark time. The show runs from Memorial Day weekend through Native American Day.

  8. The Memorial is otherwise open from 8am until dark during the rest of the year.

  9. Other then the light show, you can see the visitor center, museums, gift shop, and mountain carving. There is two theaters that show the history of Native Americans in the region and the prgression of mountain carving. Also, there are a Native American Cultural Center where you can check out many artifacts and sculptures.
