The Zinnia







  • Modern zinnias are derived from primarily one species,
    Zinnia elegans. They are native to Mexico.
  • Zinnias were cultivated as far back as 1520 by the Aztecs
    at the time of the Spanish invasion.
  • Zinnias were brought to Europe in 1753.
  • The most important species, Zinnia elegans,came to Europe
    in 1796 and was popular by 1829.
  • They were named after J. G. Zinn, a professor of physics and
    botany, who died in 1758.
