The Zinnia
- Modern zinnias are derived from primarily one species,
Zinnia elegans.
They are native to Mexico.
- Zinnias were cultivated as far back as 1520 by the Aztecs
at the time of the
Spanish invasion.
- Zinnias were brought to Europe in 1753.
- The most important species, Zinnia elegans,came to Europe
in 1796 and was
popular by 1829.
- They were named after J. G. Zinn, a professor of physics and
botany, who died
in 1758.
