Emma Engelkes (pictured at left) was the first in the line of women to own and run her own greenhouse business.
She started out in Iowa. The Cloverdale Garden Center was the name of her greenhouse and on the grand opening day there was a historical
blizzard.
Emma ran her greenhouse until she moved to Park Rapids, Minnesota where her and her husband, Omke, began flea marketing. Their green
thumbs didn't go to waste though. Their personal gardens blossomed and their yard became the prettiest on the block.
Emma's daughter Annette opened her own shop, Rhodes Garden Center. Annette Rhodes originally opened the business to raise more money
so she could attend conventions in Bismarck, North Dakota. When Annette's blood pressure became a problem, she sold the store to her daughter, Beth.
Beth had worked for her mother for four years before she bought her mother's store. The Rhodes Garden Center became a part of Curiousity Corner,
a second hand shop that Beth owned. After a couple years, Beth decided to concentrate on the greenhouse part of it more. She moved the premises to
Annette's farm land just outside of town. They started with two greenhouses. They now have four greenhouses, plenty of parking, and a handicap accessible ramp.
