Divisions

At this time, divisions do not have a lot of meaning.  However when we cover CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) divisions will become important.

 

Spans

Again, at this time, spans do not have a lot of meaning.  However when we cover CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) spans will become important.

 

Here is the author's example showing divisions and spans, but no CSS implemented, therefore the page looks plain.
